FashMash Pioneers: Cutting Edge Product Innovation With Heist Studios

January 30 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

£20

Many of you will remember the sharkskin-inspired swimsuit for Speedo, a record-breaking Olympic-winning design that ended up being banned from the sport for the fact it gave the competitors wearing it an unfair advantage. It was a piece of product innovation history.

Jump forward to today, and the inventor behind it, Fiona Fairhurst, is bringing her innovative design approach to direct-to-consumer brand, Heist. More specifically, she’s bringing it to shapewear – starting with the launch of a bodysuit composed of contouring panels that model to the body’s fascia matrix – the connective tissue beneath the skin that stabilises our muscles and internal organs.

Join us to hear Fiona talk about the science and technology behind her inventions, why we as consumers are demanding more than ever performance from what we wear, and what the impact of such disruptive designs could have on a fashion industry obsessed with athleisure.

Please note: the talk will begin promptly at 6.30pm.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER:

As VP Innovation at Heist, Fiona Fairhurst brings her expertise in high-performance sportswear to bodywear, as part of a team of best-in-class inventors and material scientists who are using customer-led insight and cutting-edge technology to create radically better underwear. Fiona rose to fame during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games as the inventor of a full bodysuit swimwear known as FASTSKIN® that used biomimetic sharkskin technology to enhance performance. Worn by swimmers from over 130 countries during the games, the swimwear set 13 out of 15 world records and contributed to 47 Olympic medals. Fiona went on to be the lead clothing consultant for the UK Sport Innovation Team for Team GB. Fiona, who holds an MSc in textile technology from the University of Huddersfield, a BA (Hons) from Leeds University and an MA from Central St Martins London, was nominated for a European Inventor of the Year Award in 2009.
